The recordings were found partially buried near
the mouth of the cave. Seven unlabeled cardboard
boxes, sealed with duct tape, layered with small
stones and bone fragments, they were all but
impossible to miss. But while the location of the
boxes seemed to welcome discovery, the music
itself, encoded on a range of obsolete media,
suggested the opposite—that the content of
these disintegrating reels and bit-rotted discs
was and should remain a secret.

Due to the unfortunate events following their
retrieval, I cannot determine with certainty
how the recordings were made, with what
equipment. And similarly I can only speculate
about their original purpose, whether for
relaxation, ritual, meditation, exercise, or
simply entertainment in the dark, subterranean
world of their creator. They are the musical
equivalent of shadows flickering on the wall
of the cave in which they were uncovered,
dancing silhouettes transcribing inner
longings and desires. What they meant to those
who first heard them reverberating in the rocky
hollows of the underground is a mystery.

Since unearthing the collection I have learned
of similar findings in other parts of the world.
Mysterious repositories of burned CDs.
Cassette archives from which all identifying
traces have been erased in hiss. But the
Cavedweller recordings, as I have come to
call them, are distinct in two regards. First, in
transferring the music to formats playable on
modern devices, portions of the masters were
by necessity destroyed. Though I have labored
to fill those gaps with sonic reproductions that
are, to my ear, indistinguishable from what was
lost, it must be noted that the genuine article—
the authentic output of the Cavedweller—
is irrecoverable.

The second distinguishing factor can be thought
of as an extension of the first. Soon after I
removed the recordings from the cave, the
entryway collapsed in what was later determined
to be a localized seismological event, eliminating
all possibility of further exploration. Having
surrendered this one small token to the surface,
the tunnel appears unwilling to give up more,
caching whatever else it may contain forever
deep within the earth.
